Just wrapped a humongoid photo shoot here in the studio with the folks from Fenuxe magazine. The spread is for their annual pet issue and will feature pets that are in need of adoption from various adoption agencies around the ATL, Shorty.
We photographed two blinged out Pit Bulls, nine kittens, one Sphinx cat (wearing a $6000 handmade necklace), a tortoise, a Great Dane, two Chihuahuas, and two house rabbits. We will post some of this after the issue hits the streets in mid-August.
Thanks again to everyone who came out to help today!

Abby! Mutt of the Week

Our Mutt of the Week is Abby! That's quite the dog smile, isn't it?
She is the fur baby of Andrea, owner and artist at Forever Impressions. Abby is wearing a handmade silver keepsake dog tag, custom made by her mom (and cleverly covered by my watermark, oops). Please be sure to check them out!
The Mutts Project has really caught fire lately. We've had some spectacular mixes coming in and all of the work has really helped me refine my vision for the project. We'll start rolling some of this out in the next week or so. Stay tuned!

Hannah

A few months back, I met Hannah and her mom Virginia while photographing a Rodeo in Ringgold, Georgia. They sort of took me under their wing, showed me around the rodeo, and explained what all the different events entailed. Since then, we have become friends, and they have been into the studio on several occasions. Every time they come in, we spend about an hour just yakking about everything in the world. They are both a real hoot.
This particular image was made at the Georgia High School Rodeo finals in Perry, Georgia. This project has been shot entirely on black and white film (see image below), but after making a series of portraits of Hannah this Sunday morning, I really felt like I needed to capture this image in color. Dug around in the bag a bit and found the Canon 5D, blew off the dust and grabbed this just before she had to run off for the queen ceremony.
This portrait of Hannah is part of my larger series of Rodeo Portraits:

Jelly Jars
We recently discovered Braswell's Select Organic preserves at the Dekalb Farmer's Market. The preserves are produced by a local company out of Statesboro, and they come in flavors such as cherry pomegranate, strawberry and apricot. Before dinner tonight, we had a snackatizer of crackers with honey goat cheese, salami and a dollop of Braswell's fig preserves.
The preserves are all delicious, but what I really like is that they come in adorable European drinkware. I have to admit, I've been buying way more than we need, just to get the glasses. I've got eight glasses so far - should I keep collecting until I have twelve?

Parker chimes in: These glasses remind me of our travels in Greece, where you sit down at the taverna, order a liter (or two, or three) of the local wine and they serve it in a carafe along with these small but robust European glasses. Go get you some!

Etch A Sketch Turns 50!

Etch A Sketch celebrates it's 50th Anniversary this week. Click here for some amazing examples of art created on this toy.
Seeing the amount of time wasted, I mean invested in these works reminds me of a time when, as a teenager, I spent about 90 minutes on the Etch A Sketch weaving an elaborate insult about my best friend's mama which ran several sentences in length. (Impugning the integrity of another boy's mama is a common sign of affection among teenage boys.)
I handed it to him with a giant grin, thinking how clever I was. He glanced at it, and then, without any show of emotion shook the Etch A Sketch twice, handed it back to me and went on about his business. He had just destroyed 90 minutes of my life in 2 seconds and didn't even give me the satisfaction of responding. D'oh!

Yacht Rock Revue

A couple of weeks back, I invited the smooth criminals from Yacht Rock Revue into the studio to create a group portrait. I saw them on Mother's Day in Dunwoody (Check here.) and had fallen in love with their flawless recreation of the 70's AM Soft Rock (a.k.a. Easy Rock, Smooth Rock, Lite Rock, Wuss Rock).
We mixed up some cocktails and had a great time with the shoot. The final group portrait was used on the Jumbotron (world's largest!) during their July 4 post game performance at Turner Field. Which they rocked, dog.
They are a terrific live band that can really bring the smooth 70s back into your life. If you haven't yet seen Yacht Rock Revue, you have to check them out. It's not just required, it's mandatory.

Baby F.
Why Pay More?

Boy, competition has really brought down prices for cremation, hasn't it? Seems that, like Starbucks, there's a new crematory popping up on every corner. I think there's one opening down in Underground Atlanta. That place is really hopping!

I must say that, as far as undertakers go, the proprietor of this particular crematory is quite fetching. She may even prove a small step forward in reforming the stereotype of undertakers as emaciated Harry Reid lookalikes:

She is certainly much easier on the eyes than the undertaker who haunted my childhood dreams, Angus Scrimm in the 70s horror-schlock film Phantasm:

Mutt of the Week - Tucker!
Tucker is the fur baby rescue of one of our neighbors. He is a mix of Husky and Australian Shepherd, which gives him the most amazing eyes I have ever seen on a dog.

Tucker's mom says:
"After a year of looking for "the perfect dog" we stumbled upon Tucker at a pet rescue one rainy Saturday morning. Despite my misgivings about adopting a working breed with a mysterious background, we took him home. The way he'd tuck his nose under your arm and snuggle, or just watch everyone closely to be sure he was keeping up, just charmed all of us.
Of course it was our grouchy cat, Abby, who ended up being the most amused. Tucker is a husky/Australian shepherd mix and he croons (huskies are legendary for their singing) to the cat whenever he sees her. Naturally this led us to call him Old Blue Eyes....Sinatra has nothing on this dog, nothing!
He came from a shelter in Chickamauga, Georgia. Now he's home."
